Or: Did Brahms ever revise his Horn Trio?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-7989 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.henle.de\/de\/files\/2019\/02\/Naturhorn-300x213.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" \/>A few days ago a customer enquiry momentarily gave me pause: Whether our new edition of the Johannes Brahms Horn Trio in E-flat major op. 40 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.henle.de\/en\/detail\/?Title=Horntrio+Es-dur+op.+40_811\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HN 811<\/a>) reproduced the first version of 1866 or the second version of 1891? But a later revision of a trio was done by Brahms for just the B-major Trio op. 8 \u2013 or has something else come up\u2026?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>To be on the safe side, I quickly looked at our edition of the Horn Trio (edited by Katharina Loose-Einfalt), which is based on the score and the state of research for the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brahmsausgabe.uni-kiel.de\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Johannes Brahms Gesamtausgabe<\/a><\/em> [Complete Edition] and so guarantees the utmost reliability. As expected, neither there nor in the reference work on the Brahms oeuvre, the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.henle.de\/en\/detail\/?Title=McCorkle%3A+Johannes+Brahms_2203\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thematisch-Bibliographisches Werkverzeichnis<\/a><\/em> [Thematic-Bibliographic Catalogue] by Margit L. and Donald M. McCorkle, was there the slightest trace of a revised version or later revision.<\/p>\n<p>The only \u201cchange\u201d that Brahms ever made to the Horn Trio was the addition in 1884 of a viola part as another alternative to the horn part (in addition to the already existing alternative cello part). The original music remained, however, completely untouched. (Incidentally, for further in-depth details on the work\u2019s genesis, you can freely view here the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.henle.de\/media\/foreword\/0811.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">preface<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.henle.de\/media\/review\/0811.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">critical report<\/a> of our Urtext edition.)<\/p>\n<p>But where did the information about a so-called second version of 1891 come from? Was it just a customer\u2019s confusion of Opus 40 with Opus 8? As a matter of interest, I started a brief Google search and to my astonishment landed a hit on the English Wikipedia page. The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Horn_Trio_(Brahms)\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">relevant entry to the Horn Trio<\/a> has it short and sweet: \u201cBrahms revised the trio in 1891.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7952\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.henle.de\/de\/files\/2019\/02\/Wikipedia.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"571\" height=\"510\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: smaller\"><em>Wikipedia, screenshot as of February 1, 2019<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Cited as the only evidence for this statement is the score in the <a href=\"https:\/\/imslp.org\/wiki\/Horn_Trio%2C_Op.40_(Brahms%2C_Johannes)\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Petrucci Library<\/a> (IMSLP), with even its own subclass \u201c2<sup>nd<\/sup> version (1891)\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7953\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.henle.de\/de\/files\/2019\/02\/IMSLP.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"829\" height=\"730\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: smaller\"><em>Petrucci Library (IMSLP), screenshot as of February 1, 2019<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>And this classification seems in turn to be based solely on the heading of the edition that Georg Schumann published for Edition Peters. Stated there is, in fact: \u201cZweite Bearbeitung [=Second arrangement] (1891)\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7955\" style=\"margin-top: -10px;margin-bottom: 36px\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.henle.de\/de\/files\/2019\/02\/Trio-Opus-40-Peters-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"731\" \/><\/p>\n<p>How could that be?
