As summer has begun, our blog is taking a short break until September. But what is Maurice Ravel, this year’s big anniversary celebrant, up to?
We didn’t have to search long to find him at his favourite spot, the beach at St Jean-de-Luz on the Basque Atlantic coast. Our new Urtext edition of “La Valse” will not be published until autumn 2025, but we took the opportunity to give the author an advance copy. At his first reaction: “I can’t play this,” we refrained from replying: “It’s your own fault!” Instead, we referred him to Boris Giltburg’s ingenious fingerings that make studying the piece immensely easier.
In any case, we wish Monsieur Ravel every success when he sits down with the score at the piano, and we wish you, dear readers, a wonderful, relaxing summer.
