For once – and absolutely exceptionally! – today’s post is not going to be about our beloved music, its texts or matters editorial, such as you are accustomed to reading in this blog. No, today I want to draw your attention to the strike day #fridaysforfuture coming up on 20 September 2019. This is the day when the whole world will again go on strike for more climate protection, for more specific decisions and concrete action towards a sustainable, liveable environment, instead of merely talking perpetually about it. Because we the employees of the G. Henle Verlag will join this strike, the publishing house will remain closed on Friday, September 20, 2019.

We herewith urgently invite you, other publishers, book and music dealers, yes, also you, dear blog reader:

Join our strike. Wherever you are in the world – Germany, Europe, North and South America, Middle East, Asia, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, etc. – get involved for more climate protection for our entire globe!

Let’s now collectively, loudly and clearly, give a wake-up call to the politicians, this cannot go on like it has been and is.

Each individual, every company can actively do something to protect the environment and climate. We employees at G. Henle Verlag have recently gotten together and collectively written out what all we are already doing for a healthier environment. And what we as a publishing house want to do in the future. Perhaps, you will find reading this of interest and inspiration to you, too?

Products

  • FSC: G. Henle music editions carry the “Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)” seal as evidence of the certified, sustainable forest management of all our suppliers (paper, printing)
  • Lamination: Our covers are made of traditional materials, high-quality natural cardboard or natural linen; no lamination of any kind
  • Shrink-wrapping: We do not shrink-wrap our products in protective plastic film
  • Local Production: Our music editions are produced exclusively by suppliers based in Germany (short delivery routes)

    fabric bag HN 8037

  • Packaging: To protect our products in shipping we use largely tissue paper and padding instead of plastic
  • Returns: Returns are collected for sale as far as feasible
  • Plastic bags: Instead of plastic bags for retailers and customers, we have switched to fabric and paper bags

Commuting to Work

Henle employees are encouraged to commute to work whenever possible by public transport or bicycle, through the following incentives:

  • all Henle employees will be reimbursed 100% of the cost of their respective monthly public transport tickets
  • all Henle employees are entitled to use a company bike (conventional or E-Bike)
  • Henle employees participate every year in the campaign “Biking to Work”

Publishing-House Premises

Henle employees make certain that used at the publishing house are, as far as possible, environmentally friendly and sustainable consumables:

  • Recycled paper is predominately used
  • Printer paper is used sparingly, preferably on both sides
  • Biodegradable sanitary ware and cleaning agents are used
  • Coffee beans (fair-traded) are used instead of coffee in disposable aluminium capsules

Planned for 2019/20

  • Installation and operation of a photovoltaic system (solar cells) for power generation
  • Optimisation (through appointing an independent energy consultant) of heating, cooling and power consumption throughout the publishing house
  • Strict waste separation (kitchen and office)
  • Recycling of returnable glass bottles instead of disposable plastic bottles

Comments? Suggestions?

Next time, we’ll return again to music. It’s a promise!

I think the paper-based industries have been in front of this issue for a long time, and the business is the poster child for responsible resource conservation. I’m not sure how short your delivery route is to my locale in the US (but we treasure the Henle volumes in our collection).

Thank you for this post! I commend you for your stance and efforts as a collective during this climate crisis and being an example in the music industry.

    Loved reading this!

  4. Tanya Gille says:

Bravo to Henle and its employees for their outspoken and progressive stance on climate change! You are an inspiration to everyone in taking action on this critical issue. I’m happy to read about a business that has such integrity especially when spineless, corrupt “leaders” do nothing to address such urgent problems.
